Ben's Chili Bowl is set to reopen its original location on Friday, May 1, after nearly ten months of repairs and renovations. The Ali family is throwing the doors open with a public celebration that starts at noon, a ribbon-cutting at 1 p.m., live go-go through the afternoon and plans to stay open into the early morning. The return wraps up the longest closure in the diner's history, which began when the U Street location shut down for major repairs last summer.
Official announcement and temporary pop-up
The family confirmed the news with a homepage banner inviting everyone to a "U Street Grand Re-Opening May 1st" and directing customers to a temporary pop-up at 1208 U Street while work wrapped up, according to Ben's Chili Bowl. The website has also been steering hungry fans to the other Ben's locations and its retail offerings during the downtime at the flagship spot.
What the renovation changed
Behind the familiar facade, nearly everything has been overhauled. Crews replaced the HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, doubled the building's power capacity and installed ordering kiosks, all while keeping the classic diner layout intact, The Washington Post reported. Family members described the project as a "gift back to Mom" and said that original details such as the pressed-tin ceiling were restored as they brought the aging space up to modern code.
Why the closure dragged on
The U Street location originally shut down in July 2025 for essential repairs, with the owners estimating they would only be dark for about four months, Fox 5 reported. Once work began, the reality of renovating an older building, along with inspection schedules, pushed the reopening well past those early hopes, according to that reporting.
Reopening day game plan
The May 1 festivities are scheduled to kick off at noon, with the official ribbon-cutting at 1 p.m., live music rolling through the afternoon, and the grill staying hot late into the night, WUSA9 reported. Vida Ali noted that the building "was built in 1910" and that "we added a lot but we never really changed anything," describing the balance between upgrades and preserving the old-school feel.
Who is playing the party
The music lineup leans local. Sirius Company, a contemporary go-go band rooted in the D.C. scene, is among the acts slated to perform at the reopening. The group has been a regular presence at major area venues and festivals, with Bandsintown listing the band as a staple of the regional go-go circuit.
What it means for U Street
For the Ali family, the reopening is not just about flipping the lights back on. They say it will help kick off the District's Small Business Month and mark a return to normal for the corridor after a long stretch without one of its most recognizable storefronts, according to WUSA9. For decades, Ben's has been a late-night anchor and cultural touchstone on U Street, a role highlighted in coverage of the renovation and the family's insistence on keeping the diner's look and spirit intact, The Washington Post noted.
