Akron Children’s is getting a massive financial shot in the arm, and a new name to go with it. The hospital announced Monday that philanthropist Tom Golisano is giving $50 million, the largest donation in Akron Children’s history, a gift that will pull the hospital into the growing Golisano Children’s Alliance and trigger a rebranding of its main campus.
According to a press release via PR Newswire, Golisano is spreading $125 million across three children’s health systems: $50 million for Akron Children’s, $40 million for Dayton Children’s and $35 million for Avera Health. Akron’s flagship site will be renamed “Akron Children’s, Golisano Campus,” and the three hospitals will bring the Golisano Children’s Alliance to 15 member institutions nationwide. “We’re excited to expand the Golisano Children’s Alliance once again,” Erica Dayton, the foundation’s executive director, said in the release.
As reported by Crain's Cleveland Business, the $50 million gift is the largest Akron Children’s has ever received. The hospital’s own timeline shows its previous biggest named commitment was a $10 million pledge from Kay Jewelers in 2014, which makes this latest donation an order of magnitude larger than earlier headline gifts. The scale of the check easily outpaces recent local philanthropy and could significantly widen the hospital system’s capital ambitions.
What This Will Mean Locally
Akron Children’s operates two hospital campuses and dozens of primary and specialty care locations across northeast Ohio, according to the hospital’s website. The PR Newswire release frames the new funding as a way to expand access to pediatric care close to home and strengthen services available to families in the region. Given Akron Children’s broad footprint, a single gift of this size has the potential to influence clinical programs, family support services and future bricks-and-mortar projects throughout northeast Ohio.
Part Of A Larger Campaign
Golisano’s philanthropy is not a one-off. His giving is part of a national effort that has already committed hundreds of millions of dollars to children’s hospitals that now form the core of the Golisano Children’s Alliance, as reported by Forbes. Previous gifts have typically come with naming rights and substantial capital investments at recipient hospitals, and the Akron commitment follows that same pattern.
For now, the initial announcement zeroes in on Akron Children’s new alliance membership and the upcoming campus rebranding. The release does not spell out exactly how the $50 million will be allocated. Hospital and foundation officials say they will work together on implementation and share more details once plans are finalized.
