A 41-year-old Akron man was arrested in South Florida after a 15-year-old boy told investigators he found a hidden phone recording him in the shower during a cruise, according to court records. Ship security and Broward County deputies moved in after the teen reported the video when the vessel returned to Port Everglades.

According to WOIO/Cleveland 19, court filings identify the suspect as Kevin Six of Akron and show he was charged with one felony count of digital voyeurism against a child younger than 16. Those same records indicate no attorney was listed for Six in the initial paperwork.

What Investigators Say Happened On Board

WPLG Local 10 reports the teen and Six, described in the arrest affidavit as friends, were sharing a stateroom during the cruise. The teen told investigators he was about to take a shower when he later noticed Six’s backpack in the bathroom with a phone inside, its camera pointed toward the shower area.

When the teen played the video, it allegedly showed Six placing the phone to record, according to the affidavit cited by WPLG. The teen copied the clip to his own phone, told his grandmother what he had found and followed her advice to report the incident to cruise security.

Detention At Sea And Arrest In Port

Authorities say both the teen and Six were placed in isolation on the ship while the report was investigated at sea. When the vessel docked at Port Everglades on Friday, Broward County deputies arrested Six and booked him into the county jail.

A detective’s affidavit quoted in the court records states Six said he was sorry and that he did not know why it happened.

Where The Case Stands Now

Court records show Six later posted a $50,000 bond and was released from custody pending prosecution. He did not appear on the Broward County inmate roster as of the latest public checks.

The case remains active in Broward County courts. Future filings will determine whether prosecutors seek additional charges or any federal involvement.

What Digital Voyeurism Means Under Florida Law

Under Florida law, digital voyeurism involves intentionally using an imaging device to secretly view, broadcast, or record someone who is dressing or undressing, or is otherwise exposed, in a place where that person reasonably expects privacy. The full definition appears in Florida Statutes, s. 810.145.

The law increases penalties when the victim is younger than 16 and the accused is over a certain age. Based on the allegations described in the court documents, prosecutors could pursue this as a second-degree felony in Florida, which carries a statutory maximum sentence of up to 15 years under state sentencing rules; see Florida Statutes, s. 775.082.

Hidden Cameras On Cruises Under Wider Scrutiny

Hidden-camera cases on cruise ships have drawn growing attention from federal authorities, particularly when they involve multiple victims or crew members abusing their access. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Florida last year secured a 30-year federal sentence for a crew member who planted cameras in passenger bathrooms, according to a Department of Justice release, underscoring how quickly such investigations can escalate beyond local charges.

The case against Six is still pending and will continue through Broward County’s court system. This story will be updated as new court filings or official statements are made public.
