A brutal case out of a Springfield Township motel moved a step closer to resolution Thursday, as Jason Santos pleaded guilty in Summit County to first-degree rape, multiple counts of felonious assault and child endangerment. Prosecutors say his infant daughter was found with signs of severe trauma at the Red Roof Inn in Springfield Township late last year. Santos entered the plea in Summit County Common Pleas Court and is scheduled to be sentenced on April 21. The child survived and remains hospitalized, according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors outline brutal injuries
According to the Summit County Prosecutor's Office, first responders revived the unresponsive infant after a 911 call on Nov. 22, 2024, at the Red Roof Inn at 2939 South Arlington Road. Medical teams then discovered extensive injuries that prosecutors say included a traumatic brain injury and internal bleeding that led to hemorrhagic shock. Court documents state the baby had extensive bruising, a broken clavicle and dozens of fractures, later tallied at 34 total fractures, and that medical exams found evidence consistent with sexual assault. The Summit County Prosecutor's Office detailed those injuries in a Dec. 18, 2024 indictment.
Plea change and court schedule
Santos changed his plea to guilty in Summit County Common Pleas Court, admitting to counts that include first-degree rape and multiple felonious-assault charges, according to WKYC. He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 21, and prosecutors told the court they will not ask that the judge impose life without parole, although the assigned judge could still impose that penalty. The change of plea follows months of investigation, medical examinations and a grand jury indictment.
Indictment details
A Dec. 18, 2024 grand jury indictment charged Santos and his then-partner, Jamilee Hunt, with one count of rape, five counts of felonious assault and multiple endangering-children offenses, the prosecutor's release states. The office also noted that Hunt faces an additional fourth-degree endangering charge tied to a prior conviction. The indictments contain allegations the state must still prove at trial or through a plea, and both defendants were initially held in the Summit County Jail after their November arrests. The Summit County Prosecutor's Office laid out the counts when charges were first filed.
Co-defendant's status
Santos' co-defendant, Jamilee Hunt, was scheduled to face trial on April 21, according to WKYC. Authorities have said both were in the child's care when the injuries occurred and that investigators continue to piece together the events that led to the baby's critical condition.
Red Roof Inn and local fallout
The Springfield Township Red Roof Inn on South Arlington Road has been under local scrutiny for some time. Township officials filed a nuisance complaint last year after hundreds of police calls tied to the property, reporting that those calls included overdoses, fights and robberies, as reported by Cleveland19. The motel drew renewed attention this March after a separate sexual-assault case connected to the property resulted in a 20-to-25-year sentence for a different defendant, a case summarized in coverage of the housekeeper's terror ends with 20-to-25 years behind bars, highlighting continuing community concern about the site.
Legal outlook
Because the case includes a first-degree rape charge, Santos faces the possibility of life behind bars in an aggravated case, as outlined in Ohio law. The ultimate sentence will be determined by the judge after a hearing, guided by the Ohio Revised Code and applicable sentencing statutes.
