Michigan point guard Elliot Cadeau gave the Wolverines a brief scare on Wednesday in Ann Arbor, receiving medical attention for what the team described as an apparent allergic reaction just as they were getting ready to head to the airport for the trip to the Final Four in Indianapolis. Trainers examined Cadeau at the university's Player Development Center, and then he was taken outside to a waiting ambulance while the rest of the team continued its departure plans. The school said he was under medical supervision and expected to join the team in Indianapolis later in the day.
Video shows player taken from team facility
A video posted by Detroit radio station WWJ 950 appeared to show a covered individual on a gurney being rolled out of the Wolverines' Player Development Center and into a Huron Valley ambulance, according to The Associated Press. Michigan later confirmed that the person in the footage was Cadeau and said he had reported a possible allergic reaction to something he ate, according to the report. The combination of local video and the school's confirmation added some last-minute drama as the team prepared to head for Lucas Oil Stadium.
Team statement: 'He is fine'
"The doctors evaluated Elliot and he is fine," Michigan spokesperson Tom Wywrot said in a statement, adding that "out of an abundance of caution, he is receiving medical supervision and will be traveling to Indianapolis later today," as reported by CBS Sports. The Wolverines left Ann Arbor for Indianapolis after medical staff cleared most of the roster to travel, with coaches planning to keep a close eye on Cadeau's status ahead of Saturday's national semifinal.
Cadeau's importance to Michigan's run
Cadeau has been a primary playmaker for the No. 1 Wolverines all season, averaging roughly 10 points and about 5–6 assists per game, according to ESPN. In the NCAA tournament, he has turned in some of Michigan's most important performances, including 17 points and seven assists in the Sweet 16 and a 10-assist outing in the Elite Eight that helped punch the Wolverines' ticket to the Final Four, as detailed by ClickOnDetroit. His availability will play a major role in how coach Dusty May sets his rotation and game plan for Arizona.
What comes next
The school said Cadeau was receiving medical supervision and would travel to Indianapolis later in the day to rejoin Michigan ahead of its Final Four matchup against Arizona on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium, and the Wolverines are scheduled to practice at Lucas Oil on Thursday and Friday, according to The Detroit News. Michigan enters the weekend at 35–3 and is expected to lean on its backcourt depth while staff monitors Cadeau and updates his status as needed. The program said that any further information will come from the team's medical personnel and the athletic department.
