Avelo Airlines is pulling out of Washington Dulles International Airport after less than two years of scheduled service, cutting one more budget option from the region’s lineup and nudging price-conscious travelers toward other airports. The Houston-based low-cost carrier has been trimming its route map as it concentrates flying on a smaller group of bases. Customers who booked Avelo itineraries to or from Dulles should keep a close eye on their reservations for changes.

As reported by Washington Business Journal on April 17, 2026, Avelo told airport officials it is exiting Dulles and will keep serving the Washington area from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI). The move wipes out a short-lived option at IAD that started with Avelo’s summer 2024 expansion.

In a Jan. 6 press release, Avelo framed the shakeup as part of a broader network simplification following a recent recapitalization, saying it was "streamlining its network around four current bases." Avelo Airlines said it plans fleet and schedule adjustments to focus capacity on core markets, which tends to put experimental routes like Dulles on the chopping block when numbers do not cooperate.

Short-lived Dulles run

Avelo inaugurated service at Dulles on July 12, 2024, when the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority welcomed the carrier as a new partner. Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority confirms the carrier’s inaugural IAD–Tweed New Haven flight that summer, which keeps Avelo’s IAD stint under the two-year mark.

Industry shakeup behind the move

Trade reporting has tracked Avelo’s consolidation since early 2026, noting base closures and route cuts as the airline narrows operations to stabilize its finances. Aviation Week reported that the carrier is refocusing on a smaller group of bases and preparing for future Embraer E195-E2 deliveries. Those steps leave little room for short-run experiments like Dulles when performance lags.

What travelers should know

Avelo’s January notice said impacted customers would be contacted directly and urged travelers to check reservations for rebooking or refunds. Avelo Airlines also pointed flyers to its customer-service channels. Passengers still hunting for low fares in the region can look for Avelo flights from BWI or turn to alternative carriers at Dulles and Reagan National.
