A tense Friday-night confrontation on Columbus' northeast side ended with gunfire, a wounded victim, and an early-morning arrest, according to police.
Officers were first called to the Bar Harbor Road area on reports of a fight and a single gunshot. By the time they arrived, neither the suspect nor the victim was at the scene. A short time later, a person with an upper-body gunshot wound walked into a local hospital and was later transferred to another facility. Police said the victim is expected to survive.
Investigators ultimately identified 28-year-old Michael Stevens of Columbus as the alleged shooter and charged him with felonious assault, according to CW Columbus. The outlet reports that a tip from the hospital helped detectives connect the dots and locate the wounded victim after the initial scene had cleared.
What the charge means
Felonious assault in Ohio is defined under Ohio Revised Code §2903.11. The statute covers situations where someone knowingly causes serious physical harm to another person or uses a deadly weapon.
Under the state's sentencing rules, a second-degree felony generally carries a minimum prison term of two to eight years, according to ORC §2929.14. That range can increase if firearm specifications or other aggravating factors are involved.
Investigation and next steps
Police say they identified and arrested Stevens early Saturday morning, and that he remains in custody while detectives continue to investigate, according to CW Columbus. Authorities have not released information on a possible motive or the names of the hospitals involved, and it is not yet clear whether additional charges will be filed.
The case remains under investigation. We will update this story as more details, including any court filings, become available.
