An unpaid bar tab on San Antonio's far West Side allegedly escalated into a drive-by style shootout Friday night, after a 24-year-old customer's credit cards were declined and he reportedly opened fire on the bar's building and crowded patio. A security guard shot back as the suspect sped off, and somehow, no one was hit.
What Deputies Say Happened
Bexar County deputies say they responded to a shooting at a bar in the Alamo Ranch area on Friday and learned that 24-year-old Michael Garcia allegedly opened fire on the building and a busy patio area after his credit cards were declined. Witnesses told investigators that Garcia fired multiple rounds from his vehicle as he drove away, and deputies say they later traced that vehicle to a garage at a nearby residence. A security guard at the bar returned fire during the incident.
According to witnesses, Garcia was positively identified and later booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center on charges of aggravated robbery and deadly conduct, as reported by News 4 San Antonio.
Charges And Legal Context
Garcia is facing aggravated-robbery and deadly-conduct charges, both serious felonies under Texas law. Aggravated robbery is outlined in the Texas Penal Code as a heightened form of robbery that typically involves a deadly weapon or serious bodily injury.
Deadly conduct, which can include knowingly firing a gun at a building that is occupied or in the direction of people, is defined under Section 22.05. Whether the security guard's return fire will be treated as lawful use of force depends on fact-heavy questions about self-defense and defense of others under Chapter 9 of the Penal Code. Those issues are typically sorted out by prosecutors or juries; the standard for defending a third person is set out in Section 9.33.
Neighborhood Safety And Response
The gunfire rattled Alamo Ranch, a fast-growing far-west San Antonio neighborhood that has recently been the focus of stepped-up sheriff patrols and community safety efforts. Earlier coverage has highlighted that crime has dipped in the area following the deployment of Bexar County Sheriff's mobile units, a trend that makes Friday's shots over a bar tab feel especially jarring to nearby businesses and patio regulars.
The sheriff's office noted the response in a Facebook post and said the investigation is ongoing. Jail records confirm that Garcia was booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center, according to News 4 San Antonio. Deputies have not publicly released the bar's name, and more details could surface as the case moves forward.
