Better-Maid Donut Co., the tiny institution that once drew bleary-eyed, early-morning lines in Crafton Heights, is back in business on a new stretch of asphalt. The long-running shop has quietly reopened at 2101 Greentree Road in Scott Township, returning after a temporary shutdown in the summer of 2025 tied to a landlord dispute at its Steuben Street location. Following months of build-out, the new storefront is again turning out the shop’s signature cake and filled donuts to a neighborhood that had been waiting.
Owner Drew Turner, who took over Better-Maid in 2024, called the Scott Township spot "great" and praised the parking and "wonderful neighbors." Those comments were first published by the Pittsburgh Business Times and republished by WPXI.
The shop had operated for decades on Steuben Street in Crafton Heights before closing in the summer of 2025 after a dispute with the property's landlord, according to WTAE. That July shutdown triggered a months-long search for a workable new space and a full pause in production, a break that fans loudly lamented across local forums and social media posts.
How They Landed On Greentree Road
An earlier attempt to buy a building in the West End ultimately proved too expensive, so the owners shifted gears and opted to lease at Scott Towne Center instead. They took over the former Albero Verde unit at 2101 Greentree Road, a move that was noted in local coverage of spring openings and in reporting on the lengthy build-out that led up to reopening, as covered by Pittsburgh Magazine.
Why Locals Are Excited
Better-Maid built its following on consistently well-made cake and jelly donuts that, as local food writers have pointed out, routinely sell out early. That built-in scarcity helped give the Steuben Street shop a bit of mystique. Coverage of the move noted that the owners planned to bring their existing equipment and the shop's longtime donut maker to the Greentree Road location, a signal that regulars can expect a familiar product, according to Audacy.
The owners have not released a formal schedule beyond sticking to Better-Maid's usual early-morning rhythm, so customers are still advised to show up on the earlier side to avoid sellouts. The reopening itself was confirmed in local business coverage, and Turner described finally getting the doors open as a little bit of a monkey off the back after a stressful build-out. WPXI reported that the shop is now open following those months of work.
