Jala Petree, a youth basketball coach at HYPE Athletics in Dearborn Heights, is still in the hospital after a fiery collision with a semitruck in Canton Township two weeks ago. Good Samaritans pulled her from the wreckage before first responders got there, and her family says her injuries are so severe that she will not be coaching this summer.
Crash and rescue
According to CBS News Detroit, the crash happened on a Wednesday, when Petree's vehicle collided with a semitruck and caught fire. Witnesses at the scene rushed in, pulling her from the burning car and staying with her until emergency crews arrived. Her family credits those bystanders with saving her life and says the outpouring of support from the community since then has been overwhelming.
Serious injuries and hospital care
Petree’s father, Jamey Petree, told CBS News Detroit that she suffered a broken femur, dislocated hips, severe head trauma, a broken nose and second-degree burns. She has already undergone multiple surgeries and is receiving round-the-clock care. Her family says she has also experienced seizures during treatment, but they are holding onto the progress they see. "Every day she's been fighting and we've seen progress every day," her father said.
HYPE Athletics and her work with kids
HYPE Athletics runs youth basketball training, travel teams and community programs out of its Warren Avenue center in Dearborn Heights, as outlined by HYPE Athletics. Players and parents describe Petree as a steady, encouraging presence on the sideline whose absence will be felt at the nonprofit's upcoming summer sessions. Her background as a prep player at Ypsilanti Arbor Prep is documented in local player records, reflecting her long ties to the area’s youth hoops scene.
Community rallies, family focuses on recovery
Family members say they are deeply grateful to the strangers who pulled Petree from the wreckage and to the many supporters who have been reaching out since the crash. For now, they say the focus is squarely on her recovery. They have asked for privacy while she remains hospitalized and continues what is expected to be a lengthy rehabilitation over the coming weeks and months.
