Hikers on a Rancho Palos Verdes trail got a jolting surprise Tuesday morning when they spotted a man carrying what looked like a rifle and called it in. Los Angeles County deputies arrived at the scene and arrested the armed man on the trail, taking him into custody without incident, authorities said.
Deputies told CBS News Los Angeles the suspect was wearing body armor and holding a green-and-purple AR-style rifle. Video from the outlet shows multiple deputies detaining the man along a dirt path in the Palos Verdes hills.
What deputies say they found
According to deputies, the AR-style rifle was covered in Joker-themed graffiti, with phrases like “Why so serious?” and “Let’s put a smile on that face” painted on the receiver. They told CBS News Los Angeles that the arrest unfolded after hikers reported the sighting, and law enforcement quickly moved in on the location.
Trails and patrols on the peninsula
The Palos Verdes Nature Preserve spans roughly 1,500 acres, with a web of public trails popular with hikers, families, and dog walkers. City officials urge visitors to check current trail conditions and any posted alerts before heading out. The preserve is co-managed by the city and the nonprofit conservancy: maps, trail guides, and guided-walk programs are available through the City of Rancho Palos Verdes and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy.
