Two overnight visitors to the Cuyahoga County Metzenbaum Center were not there for paperwork. Security-camera footage shows a pair walking into the juvenile-services building in the early hours of March 9 and walking out with tactical gear, electronics and other equipment, according to county officials. Reports list the missing items as bulletproof vests, handcuffs, pepper spray, two-way radios and televisions. Authorities have described the burglary as brazen, and as of now, detectives are still working the case with no arrests announced.
Video captures the break-in
Security video reviewed by FOX 8 shows two people hauling items out of the Metzenbaum Center and loading them into a vehicle. The station reports the incident occurred in the early morning of March 9 and that investigators have classified it as an active burglary probe. Deputies have not yet taken the two people seen on the surveillance footage into custody, according to the outlet.
Where it happened
The theft took place at the county’s Metzenbaum Center on Community College Avenue, a building that houses juvenile-court programs and county staff, per the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court. Because the facility serves the public, officials say various security and office equipment are kept on-site.
Officials voice concern
Chief Deputy Aaron Reese told FOX 8 that officials are “concerned because crimes have occurred with suspects wearing ballistic vests,” highlighting the risk when tactical gear ends up outside official channels. Reese said investigators are reviewing multiple leads along with the security footage in an effort to identify the suspects. The sheriff’s office says the investigation remains ongoing.
How to help investigators
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Detective Bureau at (216) 443-6130 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at (216) 252-7463. Crime Stoppers operates a 24/7 tipline and online portal for anonymous reporting, according to Crime Stoppers of Cuyahoga County. Investigators say time-stamped video, dash-cam footage or other leads from the neighborhood could be key to putting names to the faces in the surveillance video.
Local costs and context
Stealing specialized gear does more than leave some empty hooks in a supply room. Replacing items like body armor and communications equipment can strain budgets and disrupt everyday security operations. Cuyahoga County procurement records show the government routinely sets aside money for body armor for protective officers. A public purchasing notice lists plans for the county to acquire dozens of vests for protective-service staff, according to a Cuyahoga County purchasing notice. Officials did not immediately say whether the stolen gear is insured or slated for replacement.
