Colfax Avenue turned into a no-go zone at North Ironton Street on Thursday after a broken gas line forced authorities to shut down all westbound and eastbound lanes, clogging one of Aurora's busiest east-west routes and sending drivers scrambling through side streets. Officials urged motorists to steer clear of the intersection while crews assessed the situation.
Aurora Police Issue Traffic Alert
In a post on X, the Aurora Police Department reported that the intersection was closed because of a broken gas line and told drivers to use alternate routes. As of the initial alert, the department had not provided an estimated time for the intersection to reopen.
Intersection Already Under Construction
The Colfax and Ironton intersection was already dealing with a scheduled one-lane closure for a city water project running from April 6 through April 27, according to the City of Aurora's road construction updates. That ongoing work could tighten detour options and add to backups on nearby surface streets.
What To Do If You Suspect a Gas Leak
Utility guidance advises anyone who suspects a gas leak to leave the area right away and call 911, followed by the gas company's emergency number. According to Xcel Energy, the gas emergency line is 800-895-2999. Residents are urged to avoid open flames and to refrain from operating vehicles or equipment near a suspected leak.
This story will be updated as the Aurora Police, the City of Aurora or utility providers release more information. Drivers should keep an eye on official channels for detours and delays.
