A man riding a motorized bike is fighting for his life after a hit-and-run crash Thursday night in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx, according to police. The collision happened just before 9:15 p.m. at East 211th Street and Boston Road, witnesses say. Emergency Medical Services rushed the rider to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where he is listed in critical condition.
Police say the rider was heading southbound on a two-wheeled device when he collided with a vehicle that took off instead of stopping, as reported by News 12. Citizen-app video from the intersection shows what appears to be a green dirt bike lying near crime-scene tape and scattered debris, the outlet notes. The NYPD has opened an investigation, and as of press time had not released any arrests or suspect descriptions.
Borough crash numbers point to a bigger problem
A 2024 report from the NYC Department of Transportation counted more than 100 injuries involving motorized two-wheelers in the Bronx last year, underscoring a wider safety issue in the borough. The DOT separates e-bikes, mopeds and other motorized two-wheelers from traditional bicycles in its data to show how these vehicles factor into city crashes.
What the law says
Drivers who leave the scene after causing serious injury can face criminal charges under state law. Guidance from the New York State courts notes that Vehicle & Traffic Law § 600 treats departures that involve "serious physical injury" as a class E felony, meaning a fleeing driver could be prosecuted if investigators can prove the required elements of the offense.
Investigation ongoing
Authorities say the probe is active and they are asking anyone who saw the crash or has relevant information to contact detectives. As reported by News 12, the case remains under investigation and updates are expected as more details emerge.
