Tuesday night’s commute at the East 149th Street subway station in the Bronx turned scary when a man was shoved off the platform and onto the tracks after a heated confrontation, according to police.
The clash broke out just after 8:30 p.m. on the platform, where the victim and another man got into an argument, News12 New York reported. At some point in the dispute, the other man allegedly forced the victim off the platform.
Police say the victim was able to scramble back onto the platform before any train pulled into the station, avoiding what could have been a much worse outcome. EMS took him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln, where officials say he is expected to recover. Authorities told News12 New York that the man did not make contact with an oncoming train.
Part of a troubling pattern
The Bronx incident lands in the middle of a worrying run of subway shoves across New York City this year. In one March case on the Upper East Side, an elderly victim died after being pushed, and prosecutors later upgraded the charges to murder, according to the Associated Press. Investigators in that case relied on surveillance footage to track down a suspect.
Investigation ongoing
As for Tuesday’s shove at East 149th Street, police say the investigation is active and they have not released any information on a suspect or a possible motive, per News12 New York. Authorities are asking anyone who might have seen the confrontation or its aftermath to contact law enforcement so investigators can follow up.
