A routine traffic stop in Canyon Country on Thursday night quickly escalated into a sizable narcotics bust after deputies reported finding roughly half a pound of methamphetamine along with packaging associated with street sales. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, members of the Special Assignment Team pulled the vehicle over for a vehicle code violation, then launched a narcotics investigation at the scene. Both occupants were taken into custody, with the post identifying the passenger as a 66-year-old Covina man and the driver as a 35-year-old Pomona man. The department released their ages and hometowns but did not provide names.
In a Facebook post, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station said deputies recovered about 0.5 pounds of suspected methamphetamine during the stop, along with a digital scale, numerous small baggies and other items consistent with narcotics sales. The station noted that the Special Assignment Team initiated the narcotics investigation after pulling the vehicle over for a traffic violation and that both men were arrested without incident.
What deputies found
The collection of seized items, including the meth, scale and small baggies, is often cited by deputies as evidence pointing to distribution rather than personal use. Similar traffic-stop seizures have surfaced across the valley in recent months. An earlier January traffic stop in Canyon Country also turned up meth, small baggies and a digital scale.
Arrests and charges
According to the station's post, the passenger was booked on a felony narcotics sales charge, while the driver was arrested on suspicion of felony transportation of narcotics for sale. Deputies reported recovering roughly 0.5 pounds of suspected meth, along with the packaging materials and digital scale, and said both men were taken into custody at the scene, per the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.
