A fast-moving fire tore through a row of storage units at a north Raleigh self-storage site along Capital Boulevard on Sunday afternoon, belching thick smoke into the sky and pulling in a large response from city firefighters. Crews managed to corral the flames, and there were no immediate reports of injuries, though traffic briefly jammed near the U.S. 401 and U.S. 1 split while emergency vehicles worked the scene.
The Raleigh Fire Department said the blaze was reported at 4204 Capital Boulevard, where a cluster of units caught fire. Raleigh Division Fire Chief Robert Hodge told CBS17 that up to seven units were burning at the height of the incident. According to the department, crews knocked down the flames and had the fire out by about 3:40 p.m. Investigators stayed on scene to hunt for lingering hot spots and start working on what caused the blaze.
Where It Happened
The fire broke out at the Saf‑T‑Stor Self Storage facility at 4204 Capital Boulevard, just north of the Buffalo Road intersection near the U.S. 401 and U.S. 1 split. According to Saf‑T‑Stor, the company is a family-owned business that has operated since 1983 and lists the Capital Boulevard site among its locations. Public information for the facility also includes office hours and access details for renters.
Context And Past Incidents
Storage-unit fires tend to move quickly and can wipe out a lot of property in a short time, even when no one is physically hurt. Raleigh has been through this before. In June 2024, a separate storage building fire destroyed 17 units, authorities told WRAL, a reminder of how destructive these blazes can be. Fire investigators often stress storing flammable materials safely and calling in possible fires immediately to help keep flames from spreading unit to unit.
What Tenants And Drivers Should Expect
Photos from Sunday’s scene show a gated property that appears to require key-card access, limiting who can get into the lot. Those images were reviewed by CBS17. According to Saf‑T‑Stor, the office at the Capital Boulevard location is closed on Sundays and reopens at 10 a.m. Monday, so renters with units on site are advised to contact the company directly for details on access and the status of their storage spaces.
