Parents and students at Sage Collegiate Public Charter School got tough news this week: the K–8 campus in central Las Vegas will close at the end of the 2025–2026 school year after its governing board voted to surrender the school’s charter. The brick-and-mortar campus near Charleston and Valley View, which opened in August 2022 and enrolled roughly 244 students, is bowing out as leaders say rising facility costs and mounting debt left no realistic path forward.
In an action memo from the State Public Charter School Authority, staff reported that the Sage governing board voted on April 14 to voluntarily surrender the charter and tapped Josh Kern of Ten Square to serve as the school’s closing administrator, while SPCSA staff oversee the wind‑down. The memo notes that the campus at 4100 W. Charleston Blvd served 244 students as of Oct. 1, 2025, and that the school has “struggled to meet financial performance expectations.”
Why leaders said they could not keep the doors open
Board materials presented at the meeting laid out a stark balance sheet. One slide showed about $34 million in long‑term liabilities and roughly $496,000 in liquid assets, and EdTec finance manager Miguel d'Escoto told trustees the school’s cash flow had been “kind of rough,” according to 8 News Now. Sage’s board chair, Jennifer Braster, told the outlet that increased facility costs, the lack of state facility funding, and the purchase price for the building “have been too great of a challenge” to overcome.
What the closure process will look like
SPCSA staff recommended accepting the charter surrender and outlined the standard closure steps. The agency’s checklist requires schools to hold parent meetings, secure student records, inventory assets, complete an independent financial audit within six months of closure, and maintain instruction through the end of the regular school year, according to the State Public Charter School Authority. The action memo also says SPCSA staff will work with the appointed closing administrator and other sponsored schools to help place Sage students for 2026–27 and to ensure key financial obligations are handled during the wind‑down.
A pattern of shutterings
Sage’s shutdown is the latest in a line of SPCSA‑sponsored schools that have folded or entered closure oversight in recent years. Local reporting counts TEACH Las Vegas, Eagle Charter School, Nevada Prep and Battle Born Academy among recent cases, 8 News Now reported. Opportunity 180’s Ed‑Watch coverage has repeatedly flagged PERS delinquencies and facility financing as recurring stressors for struggling charters.
What parents should know now
School leaders say they plan to finish the academic year and carry out scheduled events while the closing administrator implements a transition plan. SPCSA guidance requires the school to provide families with timelines, key contact information, and help transferring records. Families seeking updates and resources can find contact information and school notices on Sage Collegiate's website.
