A weekend thrill ride at Jackson Speedway turned terrifying when a drifting car struck a spectator and flames from its tailpipe ignited the person's clothing, according to a widely shared video from the event. The clip shows bystanders sprinting in to smother the fire while the car keeps spinning nearby during what appears to be a packed private gathering at the track.
According to The Detroit News, the footage, which the paper reports was posted by the Motor City Modified Auto Club, appears to show a white Dodge Charger doing doughnuts on a paved surface when exhaust flames reach a person standing close to the action. The outlet reports that the incident took place during a private "King of the Pit" gathering at Jackson Speedway, and notes that the club lists a general website online.
Video Shows A Close Call
The clip captures the Charger whipping in tight circles, with visible bursts of flame coming from the tailpipe that appear to catch the spectator's clothing. Several people can be seen rushing toward the car to put out the flames and help steer the vehicle away, while others in the crowd recoil and shout as the scene unfolds.
Police Response And What’s Known
Jackson police Lt. Christopher Simpson told The Detroit News that roughly 2,000 spectators attended the private event and that two Jackson police officers and two reserve officers were present. Police reported no arrests. Simpson also said a concealed-pistol license holder reported losing a weapon at the event and that "it is not known if the person whose pants caught fire was seriously injured."
Track Rules And Safety Concerns
Jackson Speedway's posted rules strongly recommend that exhibitors keep fire extinguishers in their trailers and clearly prohibit unauthorized people from being on the racing surface. Track operators say such provisions are meant to keep spectators away from moving cars and potential fuel-fed fires. Those written rules and event checklists are likely to feature prominently in any follow-up review of what occurred at the private gathering. The safety guidance is detailed on Jackson Speedway.
Community Reaction
The footage spread quickly across social media as spectators and drifting fans reposted the clip and debated what went wrong. Multiple posts and threads sharing the same video appeared within hours, a reminder of how fast moments from grassroots motorsport events can ricochet across the internet. On Reddit and other platforms, several accounts circulated identical versions of the footage.
Police say they have completed a report and are reviewing the video. It remains unclear whether the injured spectator suffered serious harm or whether any charges will result. The incident has already renewed calls within the local car community for clearer on-site safety measures at privately organized drift events.
