A routine stop for a fountain drink turned into a felony case on Tuesday in north Columbus, where police say a 31-year-old man pulled an axe on a store worker over a stolen beverage.
Officers identified the suspect as Kylian Mandela and say he filled a cup at the store fountain, then confronted the victim. Patrol officers later arrested Mandela and recovered an axe, according to authorities.
In a Facebook update from the Columbus Division of Police, investigators say the incident happened April 28 on the 2200 block of E. Dublin Granville Road. Police report that Mandela allegedly filled a cup at the fountain machine and walked out, then came back and threatened the clerk after pulling an axe from his pants, reportedly saying the victim should hand over the cup “or else.” Detectives say store security video matched what the victim told officers.
Police Say Video Backs Up Clerk’s Story
Mandela was booked on an aggravated robbery charge after the arrest, the department wrote. Under Ohio law aggravated robbery is defined in Section 2911.01 of the Ohio Revised Code and is typically prosecuted as a first-degree felony. Sentencing ranges for first-degree felonies are set by state law and can include multi-year prison terms. The details are laid out in Ohio Revised Code §2911.01 and §2929.14 on sentencing.
How The Arrest Unfolded
