A Camden County criminal investigation that started in North Carolina ended this week in Charleston, South Carolina, with three suspects now sitting in a local jail as officials line up the paperwork to bring them back across state lines.
The Camden County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that a multi‑jurisdiction operation led to three arrests in Charleston. The suspects remain in South Carolina custody while North Carolina authorities work through the process to secure their transfer, and officials say more steps are expected as the legal and extradition documents are finalized.
According to a post on the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, three people were taken into custody in Charleston and are pending extradition to North Carolina. The post credits the City of Charleston Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations with assisting Camden investigators. The sheriff’s office said those arrested are currently being held on local charges while law enforcement completes transfer paperwork.
The sheriff’s post names the three as 22‑year‑old Elijah Cruz, 18‑year‑old Riley Wood and 41‑year‑old Ashleigh Reese, all of Charleston. According to the post, Cruz faces felony abduction of a child, felony conspiracy and a misdemeanor charge for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Wood and Reese each face felony conspiracy, felony aiding and abetting and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor. “This arrest represents the successful conclusion of a multi‑jurisdiction criminal investigation,” the sheriff’s office said in its statement.
Where They Are Being Held And What Comes Next
The three suspects are being held on local charges in Charleston while officials sort out extradition paperwork and transfer logistics. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office notes that its Warrants Unit and the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center handle custody and warrant matters for arrests made in the county, including processing fugitive and extradition paperwork.
Once North Carolina provides the necessary legal documents, local agencies in South Carolina are expected to coordinate the transfer so the suspects can face charges in Camden County, according to county guidance.
Legal Implications
The allegations detailed in the sheriff’s post include felony‑level offenses that, if prosecuted and proven, can carry significant penalties under state law. After the transfer, Camden County deputies will work with prosecutors and the appropriate district attorney to determine formal charges and the next steps in the case.
Authorities have asked anyone with information related to the investigation to contact the Camden County Sheriff’s Office through its tip line or other public contact channels for updates and guidance.
