A 50-year-old Lakeland man is behind bars after investigators say dozens of illicit files showing the sexual abuse of children were traced to a home on Champion Drive. Christopher Burnside was taken into custody on April 2 and now faces 46 felony counts tied to the distribution of child sexual abuse material, authorities said. Detectives executed a search warrant at the residence, seized electronic devices, and forensic teams are still combing through the data.

According to the Tampa Free Press, detectives say a Samsung phone was used to upload and share 46 specific videos via private chats on the Kik messaging app, and the activity was traced to an email address registered to the Champion Drive location. Burnside allegedly confirmed the email belonged to him and acknowledged owning the Samsung device when detectives interviewed him at the home.

How Detectives Say They Followed the Digital Trail

As in other recent investigations, the case started with a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and investigators say they followed account and IP data straight to the residence. The county's Cyber Crimes Unit has used NCMEC reports and messaging-platform records to identify uploaders, obtain search warrants, and make arrests, as outlined by the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Legal Stakes Under Florida Law

Burnside is charged with 46 counts of promoting the sexual performance of a child, a second-degree felony under Florida law, which can carry prison terms and fines under state sentencing statutes. Florida defines "promote" to include producing, distributing, or sharing sexual performances by minors, and prosecutors can seek enhanced penalties depending on the number and nature of files. Authorities said more counts could be added as forensic analysis continues. See Florida Statutes.

Detectives executed a search warrant, seized all electronics on the premises, and booked Burnside into the Polk County Jail, where he is being held without bond, according to the Tampa Free Press. Sheriff Grady Judd said, "this suspect uploaded and shared horrible videos of children being sexually abused." Prosecutors and forensic examiners will continue reviewing seized devices as the case moves forward.
