A man was killed Monday afternoon after gunfire erupted near the busy intersection of 40th and Market streets in University City, Philadelphia, police said. Yellow tape sealed off several storefronts as officers flooded the block and moved into a corner grocery, where on-scene crews reported a pair of shoes left in the shop's entryway while detectives worked the scene.
According to NBC10 Philadelphia, SkyForce10 was over the area around 5:15 p.m. and captured a heavy police presence around the 40th and Market Grocery. The station reported there was no immediate word on what sparked the shooting or whether anyone else was hurt, and described the situation as an active police investigation.

University City context
University City serves as Philadelphia's academic and medical corridor, anchored by the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University. Market Street is one of the neighborhood's busiest commercial strips. The University City District notes the area blends campuses, hospitals and retail, meaning any violent incident along Market can quickly ripple out to students, workers and local businesses.
Investigation ongoing
Police said the investigation remained active Monday evening and urged anyone with information to contact detectives. No potential suspects or additional details had been released as of that time. Both NBC10 Philadelphia and CBS Philadelphia described the case as developing and said they would update their coverage as more information becomes available. We will update this story if officials release additional details or announce any arrests.
