A 62-year-old woman from Lecanto was killed late Thursday night after troopers say she lost control of her motorcycle on a curve along County Road 491.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, as reported by Tampa Free Press, the woman was riding a Harley-Davidson south on CR 491 around 10:45 p.m. when she failed to negotiate a curve just south of Leisure Boulevard. The motorcycle left the pavement, hit a mailbox and overturned. Emergency crews pronounced her dead at the scene, and troopers said no other vehicles or individuals were involved. The Florida Highway Patrol has not released her name, citing the need to notify her family first.

Where the crash occurred

The wreck happened on County Road 491, also known as Lecanto Highway, just south of Leisure Boulevard, a stretch regional transportation planners have already flagged for future safety upgrades. In its long-range 2045 plan, the Hernando/Citrus Metropolitan Planning Organization lists portions of CR 491, including the Leisure Boulevard area, for lane and safety improvements in upcoming funding cycles, according to the Hernando/Citrus MPO 2045 Transportation Plan.

Motorcycle risk on Florida roads

Single-vehicle motorcycle crashes like this one are a continuing piece of Florida’s broader road-safety puzzle. Transportation and safety planners have long argued that targeted corridor projects are one of the most effective ways to reduce severe crashes. Federal and state safety documents call for focusing on high-crash corridors and steering money into fix-it projects through programs such as the Highway Safety Improvement Program, as outlined in the Florida Highway Safety Improvement Program report.

Investigation ongoing

The Florida Highway Patrol told Tampa Free Press that the crash remains under investigation. Troopers have not released the rider’s identity, repeating that they are waiting until next of kin can be notified, and said additional details will be made public as the case moves forward.
