Ford Motor Co., the Dearborn automaker at the center of metro Detroit’s auto supply chain, recalled an estimated 19.6 million vehicles over the past year, more than all other automakers combined. It has been an unusually hectic stretch of safety campaigns that has dealers, regulators and owners watching how fast software fixes and hard parts actually reach local service bays.

Study: Ford Tops National Recall Charts

A fresh analysis by iSeeCars, which tallied National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall campaigns from April 2025 through March 2026, found Ford’s recalls affected roughly 19.6 million vehicles in that 12-month span. That total exceeded the combined recall volume of every other automaker during the same period. The study also projected lifetime recall counts by model and placed several Ford and Lincoln nameplates near the top of the list of vehicles most likely to face future campaigns.

Ford’s Response And The Bigger Picture

Ford executives told reporters that many of the recent recall campaigns are aimed at older model years and said the company’s latest product launches are showing better initial quality, according to The Detroit News. Even so, analysts including iSeeCars’ Karl Brauer say the sheer volume points to lingering issues beneath the sheet metal, from supplier parts to software, that Ford still needs to iron out to keep buyers and dealers confident.

Why The Recall Numbers Spiked

Part of the surge is tied to tougher federal oversight. A 2024 consent order from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requires Ford to review prior recalls and expand the number of affected vehicles when needed, a move that has driven recall counts higher, according to AP News. At the same time, modern vehicles are loaded with software and connected electronic modules, so a single defect can ripple across millions of vehicles at once.

Ford Says Most Fixes Are Software Updates

Ford and its quality team say a large share of this year’s recalls involve software issues that can be handled with over-the-air updates, mobile service visits or quick trips to the dealership. Company managers told reporters that roughly 80% of the vehicles in the current wave fall into that category, according to The Detroit News. That keeps a lot of owners out of waiting rooms, but on paper it still adds up to massive recall statistics.

What Detroit-Area Owners Should Do

Local drivers are urged to check their vehicle identification number to see if there are any open recalls and to follow Ford’s instructions. Recall repairs are performed at no cost to the owner. For the official status of any VIN, use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s lookup tool at NHTSA.gov/recalls, then schedule service with your dealer once a remedy is available.

Regulatory Watch

The NHTSA consent order requires Ford to work with an independent monitor, improve its recall decision-making process and invest in better traceability and data tools, and it leaves the door open for civil penalties if the company falls short, AP reports. Regulators say they plan to keep a close eye on Ford and the rest of the industry as more vehicle functions shift into software and connected systems.
