Flashing a pricey logo on Staten Island transit just got a little riskier, according to the NYPD’s 122nd Precinct. The command posted a safety alert on Monday warning that crews have been zeroing in on designer-brand jackets, bags and high-end sneakers in street and transit robberies.
In the alert, officers urged residents and commuters to stay sharp on train platforms and at bus stops, keep bags zipped and close to the body, and tuck valuables into interior pockets instead of easy-to-grab outer ones. The message also told people to avoid walking alone late at night and to hold bags in front of them while riding public transit so would-be thieves have less to grab.
Be aware when out & wearing anything designer brand. 👀Stay alert of your surroundings especially at us & train station platforms. 🚶♂️Avoid walking at night alone & stay in well-lit areas. 🎒Keep bags zipped & try to keep valuables in your interior pockets. pic.twitter.com/0jLHM6ZvVh

What the precinct is advising
According to NYPD 122nd Precinct on X, the safety post laid out a full checklist. Riders are urged to keep headphone volume low or use transparency mode so they can actually hear what is going on around them. Bags should be kept zipped and tight to the body, with valuables stored in interior pockets instead of on the outside.
The 122nd also advises people to avoid walking alone late at night or on low-traffic blocks whenever possible. While on transit, riders are told to hold bags in front of them, not to leave any property unattended and to use a high-quality lock if they leave items in a locker.
Similar advisories around the city
Precincts around New York City have been circulating nearly identical warnings in recent weeks, a pattern highlighted in a designer-jacket theft warning. That reporting notes that commands in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx have been posting similar checklists as they respond to street-level snatches and a market for high-end stolen goods.
How to report tips and stay safer
If you witness a robbery or capture one on video, officers say to call 911 for emergencies and preserve any footage you have. For anonymous tips, contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS or through the Crime Stoppers app. For non-emergencies, residents can reach the 122nd Precinct’s community affairs and crime prevention lines through its precinct page. The NYPD 122nd Precinct lists its station at 2320 Hylan Blvd. in New Dorp.
Police stress that the advisory is precautionary and that people should prioritize their own safety rather than trying to confront suspects. The 122nd Precinct says it will share updates on its social channels if patterns change and is encouraging residents to send in video or tips that could help investigators.
