Editor's Note: This article has been updated to reflect RNA Michigan Holdings' formal rescission of its WARN notice, which the company stated was filed in error.
RNA Michigan Holdings LLC, which does business as RNA Facilities Management, has formally rescinded a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filing that initially indicated plans to lay off 113 janitorial and facilities employees at Bates Academy in Detroit. In a letter dated April 29, 2026, to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, the company stated that the WARN notice was "filed in error due to a clerical mistake."
The original WARN filing had identified Bates Academy at 19701 Wyoming Ave. in Detroit as the affected site and set June 30 as the last day of employment for the listed positions. However, the company's rescission letter clarifies that "there will be no plant closing or mass layoff" and that "employees working at the DPS locations did not experience and will not experience an 'employment loss.'"
Operational transition without job losses
According to the rescission letter, operations at the site will be transferred, but "affected employees will remain continuously employed through the transition without a break in service, termination, or loss of wages or benefits." The company explained that because no employment loss will occur and employees will be retained through a successor or continuation of operations, WARN notice requirements do not apply.
As reported by MLive, the original WARN filing had listed 113 positions and was submitted to state labor officials in accordance with WARN requirements.
Company and local contracts
Wayne County commission documents show RNA Facilities Management has held county contracts for grounds and facilities services, listing an Ann Arbor address and a county contact for the firm. County records indicate contract amendments ran through May 19, 2026, underscoring that the company has been a local vendor for public-sector work across the region.
WARN notice requirements and rescissions
According to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, WARN notices require covered employers to provide at least 60 days' written notice for qualifying mass layoffs. Michigan's LEO site indicates that companies can formally rescind WARN notices when circumstances change or when filings are made in error.
Impact on school operations
Detroit Public Schools lists Bates Academy as an active Pre-K–8 campus at 19701 Wyoming Ave., according to the Bates Academy website. With the rescission confirming that custodial services will continue through the operational transition, the school community can expect uninterrupted facilities management.
