Interstate 10 ground to a halt Sunday morning after a power line dropped across the highway in far east Bexar County, closing the interstate in both directions and tangling traffic for commuters and freight alike. CPS Energy crews were called to the scene, and the shutdown stretched through the 13000 block of I-10, authorities said.
According to KSAT, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office blocked off the 13000 block of the interstate in both directions while utility crews worked to clear the line. The sheriff’s office told KSAT that CPS was on scene and repairs were expected to take about an hour, and drivers were urged to brace for delays and use alternate routes where possible.
Traffic and detours
Crashes or hazards that shut the main lanes can quickly clog frontage roads and nearby exits, and long stretches of I-10 are already dealing with construction-related lane shifts this month. Per TxDOT San Antonio, scheduled traffic switches and overnight closures around I-10 and Loop 1604 can make backups even worse when an unexpected closure pops up.
What drivers should do
Drivers headed across town should build in extra travel time and, if they can, stick to alternate corridors or frontage roads while crews clear the downed line and finish repairs. Hoodline previously flagged major weekend and interchange work at I-10 and Loop 1604 that can intensify backups during incidents like this, so checking local traffic maps and official updates before heading out remains the safest bet.
