Next Saturday, the Bull City hands over a big chunk of its streets and trails to the Garmin Marathon Series, as thousands of runners descend on Durham for a full marathon, half-marathon, 10K and 5K. City officials say drivers should expect rolling closures along the four race routes, with delays especially likely downtown and around Duke University as the pack moves through nearby neighborhoods.
According to the City of Durham, the official travel alert urges residents and visitors to build in extra time and lean on alternate routes on race day. The city also points drivers and runners to downloadable course maps in the post’s comments, and flags downtown and the areas around Duke’s campus as likely hot spots for congestion.
Start And Finish: Downtown To Wallace Wade
Per Garmin, the Durham stop in its Marathon Series features a Boston-qualifier full marathon and a USATF-certified half-marathon, plus 10K and 5K distances, all finishing on Brooks Field at Wallace Wade Stadium. Local reporting and organizers say the course starts near the American Tobacco Campus, sweeps past the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and stretches of the American Tobacco Trail, and is designed to show off downtown and Duke’s East Campus. Organizers estimate the races could draw up to 10,000 participants, according to The News & Observer.
Road Closures And Travel Advice
City officials note that roads and multiuse trails along the four courses will close and then reopen in stages as the races move along, with police and course marshals staffing intersections during permitted windows. Anyone heading downtown or to Duke on race morning should be ready for delays and is encouraged to plot an alternate route or hold off on nonessential trips, as outlined by the City of Durham.
What Runners And Spectators Should Know
Garmin and its local partners say race weekend will also bring a two-day expo and a finish-line festival, complete with vendors, entertainment and community activations, turning the event into more of a citywide party than a one-morning sprint. Runners and spectators are urged to follow official race communications and the Durham Sports Commission’s event page for registration information, logistics and packet-pickup details; maps and other organizer materials are available from Durham Sports Commission and Garmin.
