An Orlando woman was shot and killed Monday afternoon in the 4900 block of Eaglesmere Drive, and police say her husband is now facing a first-degree murder charge.

Officers with the Orlando Police Department were called to the area at about 1:38 p.m. on April 6 after reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a post from the Orlando Police Department.

Police identified the victim as 25-year-old Franyelin Annabel Pires Reyes (born Sept. 30, 1998). Detectives say they arrested her husband, 28-year-old Himber Alexander Rivero Romero (born Aug. 17, 1995). He was taken into custody at the scene and is charged with first-degree murder. Officers also noted that Rivero Romero was the 911 caller.

Authorities and Alleged Motive

In their public statement, the Orlando Police Department said the couple were recently separated but were still living together at the time of the shooting. Investigators stated that Pires Reyes had started a new relationship, which they say had led to ongoing disputes in the home.

Detectives have not released additional details about a possible motive. They say the investigation is active, and they are continuing to interview witnesses and process evidence collected from the scene.

Legal and Immigration Notes

According to police, both the suspect and the victim crossed the border at Eagle Pass, Texas, in September 2023. Authorities say an immigration detainer has been placed on Rivero Romero.

An immigration detainer is an administrative request asking a local jail to hold an individual so federal immigration authorities can assume custody. It is not a judicial warrant, as outlined by the Congressional Research Service. Meanwhile, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services notes that simply filing for asylum does not, by itself, grant lawful immigration status while the application is pending.

Neighborhood Context

Eaglesmere Drive has seen serious police responses before. In 2018, the street was the focus of a high-profile standoff that ended in multiple deaths and a lengthy investigation, a case extensively covered by WFTV. That history has put extra attention on major incidents in the area.

Orlando police say the current investigation remains active and that more information will be released as it becomes available.
