This morning's fishing run on the Detroit River turned chaotic when a small recreational boat capsized near the Gordie Howe International Bridge, tossing several people into the cold water. Witnesses and nearby boaters rushed to help while emergency crews scrambled to the scene, launching rescue efforts from shore and from other vessels. Multiple people were pulled from the river and one person was checked for possible hypothermia. Authorities have not yet released a full explanation for what caused the boat to flip.
According to FOX 2 Detroit, the group had been out fishing when the vessel went over. Officials told the station that at least two people were rescued and one was evaluated for hypothermia. The outlet reported that several emergency vehicles, including firefighters and police, gathered at the Del Ray public boat launch near the bridge. One person declined transport to a hospital, FOX 2 added.
Cold Water Turns A Scare Into A Close Call
The U.S. Coast Guard notes that sudden immersion in cold water can bring on cold shock and rapid hypothermia, which makes fast rescue crucial. Wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket and dressing for the water temperature, not just the air, can dramatically improve survival odds. Local urban waterways such as the Detroit River come with extra hazards, including strong currents, heavy commercial traffic and quickly changing conditions that can complicate small-boat rescues. Those reminders are part of a broader safety push the Coast Guard has been rolling out ahead of the busy boating season.
Not The First Flip On This Stretch
Incidents like this are not unheard of on the Detroit River. In November 2023, four people were rescued after their fishing boat capsized and were treated for hypothermia, according to ClickOnDetroit. That close call underscored how a routine day on the water can turn dangerous in a matter of moments.
Rescue units stayed on scene into midmorning while investigators worked to piece together the chain of events, FOX 2 Detroit reported. More details are expected once officials complete their review and release formal statements.
