Southbound drivers on the Gulf Freeway ran into a wall of brake lights Sunday afternoon after a five-vehicle crash shut down multiple lanes between Cullen Street and Scott Street and drew a heavy emergency response. Crews worked the scene while officials warned anyone headed that way to plan for a long wait or find another route.
What TranStar's incident log shows
Houston TranStar's incident log lists the wreck as "IH-45 Gulf Southbound At Scott St" and confirms five vehicles were involved. The log notes the left shoulder, right shoulder and several main lanes were blocked, pointing to a broad closure of southbound traffic that jammed the midday commute. The incident was verified at 11:58 a.m. on Sunday, according to Houston TranStar.
Officials' alert and travel advice
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez issued a traffic alert stating that five vehicles were involved and that there was a possible fatality, with deputies responding to the scene, as reported by Click2Houston. Officials urged drivers to avoid the area if possible or brace for significant delays while the wreckage was cleared.
Recent incidents and safety concerns
The crash adds to a string of serious incidents along the Gulf Freeway this month. On April 16, a collision at 16700 Gulf Freeway left a 5-year-old child dead and led to an arrest, underscoring how crashes on this high-traffic corridor can quickly turn deadly and demand extended lane closures and response times, according to City of Houston.
