
A late-night confrontation on Flint’s north side ended with a city police officer in critical condition yesterday, after investigators say he stepped between a wanted man and the man’s ex-girlfriend as she was being threatened with a gun.
The officer was rushed to a local hospital after being hit multiple times. City officials say his condition has begun to improve, a rare bit of good news in an otherwise grim scene. One suspected shooter was arrested following a vehicle pursuit, and police say they are still looking for another person tied to the incident.
What happened
According to ClickOnDetroit, the shooting unfolded yesterday, at a home on Flint’s north side. Officers were responding when a wanted man allegedly tried to assault his ex-girlfriend with a gun. As the officer moved in to protect her, he was shot multiple times, police told the outlet.
The officer was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, and the report notes that he is now improving. ClickOnDetroit also reported that police planned to release additional details on Wednesday afternoon.
Arrest, investigation and scene details
The city said the incident happened on the 6600 block of Colonial Lane around 9:30 p.m., and that the person who opened fire on the officer was taken into custody after a vehicle pursuit, according to WNEM. Michigan State Police have been called in to lead the investigation, the station reported.
Authorities told WNEM they believe a second person may have been involved and remains at large. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the shooting or the additional person of interest to contact law enforcement.
