It was already a tense day at the Florida Mall because of a bomb threat when things got even more unsettling for one worker. An Orlando man was arrested Tuesday after a female kiosk employee told deputies he grabbed her wrist and made inappropriate comments as she was opening her stand. Deputies later found the man near the mall and booked him on a battery charge.
Deputies identify suspect
Orange County deputies identified the man as John Louis and said he was wearing a black tank top and blue shorts, according to WFTV. The kiosk worker told deputies that Louis walked up as she was opening for the day, made inappropriate remarks, then grabbed her wrist without her consent. Deputies say that the contact led to the battery charge.
Bomb threat prompted evacuation earlier that day
Deputies were already at the mall conducting a sweep following a bomb threat reported earlier in the day, WFTV reported. ClickOrlando reported that the Florida Mall was evacuated as a precaution. Once the center was cleared to reopen, Louis briefly returned to the kiosk, spoke with the worker again and then left the area, according to the WFTV account. Deputies later located and arrested him in an area near the mall.
Charges and what they mean
Louis was booked on a battery charge in Orange County. Under Florida law, simple battery, defined as intentionally touching or striking another person against their will, is generally a first-degree misdemeanor that can be punished by up to one year in county jail. Repeat offenses or cases involving serious injury can be charged as felonies, according to the Florida Senate.
Context: safety at the Florida Mall
The Florida Mall has been the focus of high-profile safety incidents in recent years. WKMG's ClickOrlando reported in 2025 on a $1 million settlement after a 2020 parking-lot shooting. Local outlets have also noted a spate of recent bomb-threat evacuations that led to extra security sweeps and stepped-up patrols at the center.
The investigation into Tuesday's incident remains active, and deputies have not released additional details about a possible motive or any further charges. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
