Seattle police swarmed the Gatewood neighborhood Saturday afternoon after an 8-year-old girl reported that an adult man tried to grab her near the 36th Avenue SW and SW Othello Street area. Another child who was with her backed up her account. Officers were dispatched around 2 p.m., checked nearby streets, and put the neighborhood on alert. No arrest was reported in the initial radio traffic.
Police description and probable cause
According to radio traffic and subsequent updates, the suspect was described as a white male about 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-7, with brown hair and blue eyes. He was first reported wearing a grayish-blue hoodie and dark shorts. Later, dispatch relayed that he appeared to be in his 30s, was wearing a white shirt, carrying a black backpack, and might have been armed with a knife. An officer told dispatch that if a suspect matching that description were found, the information would amount to probable cause for a kidnapping attempt. These details were reported by West Seattle Blog.
Where to call and how police are handling it
The Southwest Precinct, which covers Gatewood, advises residents to call 911 for emergencies and to use (206) 625-5011 for non-emergencies. Seattle police also provide an online reporting system for non-urgent incidents. Officers at the scene were checking nearby blocks and following leads from the radio dispatch while detectives review the initial call. For contact and reporting information, see the Seattle Police Department.
Legal stakes
Under Washington law, terms such as “abduct” and related offenses are specifically defined, and kidnapping is treated as a felony. Kidnapping in the first degree is a class A felony, while second-degree kidnapping is generally a class B felony. Attempted abduction or unlawful imprisonment of a minor also carries serious penalties under state statute. For statutory language and penalties in RCW chapter 9A.40, see the Washington State Legislature.
Neighbors, parents and safety
West Seattle Blog said it published the scanner-based report “from the ‘better to know, just in case’ standpoint” and urged neighbors to stay alert. Parents in Gatewood said they would be extra watchful during school pickup and along walking routes, and community messages confirmed increased vigilance. Anyone with information or video related to the incident is asked to contact the Southwest Precinct or call 911 immediately.
