Police say a badly decomposed body was found Tuesday in the creek at Pennypack Park in Northeast Philadelphia, after park visitors spotted the remains and called authorities. Officers responded to the scene, but officials have not released the person’s identity or a cause of death.
According to NBC10 Philadelphia, reporter Matt DeLucia first reported the discovery. Police did not immediately say whether they suspect foul play, and the outlet described the remains as “badly decomposed,” noting that the story is still developing.
Pennypack Park, the Creek and Past Recoveries
Pennypack Park stretches along Pennypack Creek through Northeast Philadelphia, covering roughly 1,600 acres of trails, woodlands and wetlands that draw walkers and birdwatchers. Per Visit Philadelphia, the park follows the creek southeast from Upper Moreland Township to the Delaware River.
The creek has been the scene of several past recoveries and drownings, including a 2018 case covered by The Philadelphia Inquirer and a 2013 incident reported by local TV outlet 6abc. Those accounts highlight that the water can turn dangerous after heavy rain.
Investigation and How to Help
Police say they have not released further details and that the discovery remains under active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Philadelphia Police tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477), or call 911 in an emergency, per the Philadelphia Police Department.
This is a developing story. We will update this post as police release additional information or official statements.
