Grumpy's Restaurant, the Jacksonville-born diner chain known for scratch-made breakfasts and plates that barely fit on the table, is starting 2026 on a hot streak while inching closer to a new spot on Fleming Island. The company says first-quarter sales climbed across its existing locations, and franchise partners are pushing ahead on the buildout as construction and permitting move along. If the schedule holds, the Fleming Island restaurant will stretch Grumpy's reach across more of Northeast Florida and become the chain’s sixth local location.
Q1 sales momentum
According to Franchising.com, Grumpy’s posted steady month-over-month gains in the first quarter, with January up about 7.62%, February up roughly 8.62% and March climbing around 3.44%. The outlet reports that average unit volume hit $3.17 million. Grumpy’s president and CEO Daniel DeLeon said in a release carried by Franchising.com, "We’re seeing strong, steady growth to start the year, which reflects the consistency of our operating systems and the loyalty of our guests."
Fleming Island buildout picks up speed
Corporate materials show that franchisees the Hoard family are converting the former Dick’s Wings on East West Parkway into the Fleming Island Grumpy’s, which the company lists as its sixth Northeast Florida location, Grumpy’s Restaurant says. Early local coverage pointed to a March to April opening window, according to WOKV, but more recent company updates lean toward a late spring or late second quarter debut as construction continues.
What the new outpost will include
Local reporting indicates the Fleming Island restaurant is expected to seat about 130 guests and include a private dining room, a kids game area and a full-service bar, while still keeping the early morning hours that regulars know well, Jax Daily Record notes. The Hoard family, long-time franchise partners who brought back their Middleburg location after a 2022 fire, will operate the new unit, the outlet reports.
Measured expansion, healthy unit economics
Franchising coverage points to unit-level performance as a key reason existing operators are doubling down. Grumpy’s average unit volume has risen to about $3.17 million and system sales grew roughly 6.91% last year, according to Franchising.com. The company and its website credit a scratch-kitchen model, experienced local franchisees and a steady stream of community accolades as the foundation for that growth, Grumpy’s Restaurant says.
As reported by Jacksonville Business Journal on April 17, 2026, the strong Q1 performance and progress on the Fleming Island buildout highlight a cautious, community-focused expansion strategy that still leans heavily on solid unit economics. The official opening date will depend on how permitting and construction shake out, and franchise partners say they will share more updates as the project moves ahead.
