A routine Tuesday morning outside a Detroit school turned terrifying when a school nurse was carjacked at gunpoint while sitting in her parked car. Several armed suspects surrounded the vehicle, demanded the keys and sped off in the victim’s Chevy Equinox EV, taking her wallet and cellphone. The nurse had been sitting in front of Carver STEM Academy and was not physically injured.
According to Metro Detroit News, the carjacking unfolded around 9:30 a.m. in the 18700 block of Paul, near Southfield and Warren Avenue. Officers responded to the scene to investigate and reported that multiple suspects approached the vehicle before driving away in the stolen Equinox.
Detroit police are asking anyone with information to contact the department’s Commercial Auto Theft Unit at 313‑596‑2555 or Crime Stoppers at 1‑800‑SPEAK‑UP, per the Detroit Police Department. The Commercial Auto Theft section is responsible for carjacking cases and stolen‑vehicle investigations across the city.
Auto-Theft Networks Linked To Violent Crime
Law enforcement officials say stolen vehicles are frequently used in robberies and other violent offenses, and the Michigan Attorney General’s office has been targeting organized auto‑theft rings across Southeast Michigan. The attorney general’s office has announced multi‑agency arrests in an investigation that recovered dozens of stolen vehicles and related evidence, connecting such criminal networks to carjackings, according to the Michigan Attorney General's office.
About Carver STEM Academy
Carver STEM Academy serves pre‑K through eighth grade and is located on Paul Street in Detroit; the school’s website lists contact information and campus details. The district had not posted an official campus notice on the school’s news feed at the time of reporting, though basic school information remains available online at Carver STEM Academy.
Investigators are continuing to follow leads and are urging anyone who saw the suspects or the Chevy Equinox EV to contact police. Authorities say tips could help recover the vehicle, return the stolen property to the nurse and identify those responsible for the carjacking.
