Reports of gunfire near Washington Avenue and 4th Street brought a quick police response and fresh traffic headaches to downtown Las Vegas on Wednesday night, as officers briefly shut down lanes near Washington Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard and pushed drivers onto already busy side streets by the Strip.
When Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers got to the scene, they did not immediately find any gunshot victims or buildings hit, and no one was taken into custody. Detectives stayed in the area into the evening, processing the scene while traffic slowly unwound around the closures.
According to FOX5, LVMPD responded just after 6:30 p.m. to the area of Washington Avenue and 4th Street and closed lanes near Washington and Las Vegas Boulevard during the investigation. The outlet reported that police found no one and no structures hit by gunfire and that there was no suspect in custody as of the latest update, calling the situation a developing investigation.
What detectives are looking for
After incidents like this, investigators typically fan out to nearby homes and businesses, checking for witnesses and pulling surveillance video to piece together what happened. Police are asking anyone with footage or information to come forward.
Washington Avenue has seen violence before. Last September, an overnight shooting on the corridor left one teenager dead and two others critically injured, as reported in Teen Killed on Washington Avenue. Residents with tips about Wednesday night’s incident can contact LVMPD directly or submit information anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
Traffic and downtown impact
Even a short-term police shutdown around Washington and the Strip can ripple across downtown during the evening commute, slowing cars, buses, and rideshares as drivers improvise detours block by block.
The city regularly layers planned street closures on top of everyday congestion for events, parades, and construction, which can make an unexpected police investigation hit even harder. The April bulletin from the City of Las Vegas details scheduled downtown closures this month that are already primed to clog key routes during busy hours.
As of Wednesday night, LVMPD had released no additional details about the reported gunfire. Anyone who may have seen or recorded anything in the area is urged to contact Metro or Crime Stoppers. Police and local media are expected to share updates as detectives learn more.
