Mifflin Elementary School, a neighborhood fixture since 1949, is headed for its final bell. The Madison Local School Board has voted to close the 441 Reed Road building at the end of this school year, citing shrinking enrollment and growing budget shortfalls. Starting next fall, the district plans to reshuffle grade levels and convert its remaining elementary buildings into a Primary campus and an Intermediate campus. Before the doors lock for good, families, staff, and longtime neighbors are planning one last walk-through at a farewell open house on Saturday.
Parents say the decision hit like a punch to the gut. Many argue that the school’s small size and close-knit staff gave kids who crave stability a place to land. Parent Quiana Brown told News 5 Cleveland, "I'm devastated, the teachers were great, the students were kind, and my kids truly loved it there." Longtime resident Brent Lewis, who attended Mifflin in 1955 and has lived across the street for decades, said he will miss "the sound of laughter and kids playing." District officials say the building’s final day will fall at the end of the school year, and the open house is meant to give families a chance to walk the halls one last time.
Board votes and staff cuts
At its March meeting, the Madison Local School Board approved a slate of cuts and formally moved to close Mifflin as part of a deficit-reduction plan. The board voted to suspend 21 teacher and support staff contracts, and the district projects reductions totaling roughly 37.5 full-time positions in an effort to shore up its finances. Those moves are part of a broader series of cost-saving steps that school officials adopted after voters rejected a proposed income-tax swap last year, as reported by Richland Source.
Where students will go next year
Beginning next school year, Madison South will be renamed Madison Primary and will serve prekindergarten through second grade. Eastview will be repurposed as Madison Intermediate for third- and fourth-graders. District leaders say the shuffle is intended to concentrate resources and keep class sizes small while closing Mifflin, the district’s oldest and smallest elementary building. These realignments are part of the district’s plan for fall 2026, as reported by News 5 Cleveland.
Why the levy mattered
District officials have repeatedly linked the closure to a revenue shortfall after voters rejected a proposed 1.5-percent earned income tax last year. That Nov. 4 vote failed by more than 55 percent of voters, and administrators had warned that the district would face deeper cuts without new revenue. The levy setback, combined with continuing enrollment declines, pushed the board toward consolidation and staffing reductions, according to Richland Source.
Neighbors remember a neighborhood school
Generations of families have passed through Mifflin’s small classrooms, and neighbors say the loss will be felt across the entire block. Residents recall bake sales, field days, and busy crosswalks that once made the building a community hub rather than just a school. They are also worried about how students with special needs will adjust to unfamiliar buildings and routines. District officials say they hope to ease that transition by keeping class sizes small and offering supports during the move.
What families should know
Madison Local Schools is hosting an open house and farewell event at the Mifflin building on Saturday. Families who cannot attend are urged to contact the district with questions about enrollment, transportation, or special education transitions. The district’s website lists Mifflin’s phone number along with the central office contact for registration and services. For official notices and updated details, see Madison Local Schools.
