A late-morning police chase that started in northwest Houston on Monday ended in dramatic fashion near Almeda Road and Wichita Street, where the suspect vehicle crashed and two people were taken into custody, authorities said. The pursuit jumped onto U.S. Highway 59 and left a trail of scenes for investigators to work across the city.
According to Click2Houston, Houston police said the chain of events started around 11:30 a.m. in the 13400 block of the Northwest Freeway after a reported robbery that may have involved a bank. Officers identified a suspect vehicle, followed it onto Highway 59, and ended the chase after the car crashed at Almeda and Wichita; two people were detained at the scene and no injuries were reported.
Multiple scenes under investigation
Police say the suspects are linked to several stops across the city, including a reported robbery at a Walmart near Highway 290 at Tidwell and Hollister and an attempted carjacking of a woman near Wichita Street and Southmore Boulevard. Officials told reporters they have not yet confirmed whether any shots were fired during the incidents. Detectives spent Monday afternoon at several locations, collecting evidence and talking with witnesses as the investigation moved forward.
Chase risks and recent history
High-speed pursuits that spill onto busy corridors such as Highway 59 have stirred safety concerns citywide; the Houston Chronicle has recently reported on other HPD chases that ended in crashes and prompted scrutiny of pursuit policy. Police officials say they have to balance the risk of letting suspects get away with the danger a chase can pose to people on the road, and investigators will review dashcam and body-camera video as they build their case in this one.
Investigators said the probe remains active and that charges have not yet been announced, per Click2Houston. Anyone with information or video is urged to contact Houston police as detectives work to piece together the full sequence of events.
