Oʻahu’s long wait for a Sonic Drive-In is almost over, with the Kapolei location sliding into the final inspection stretch this week. The $2.6 million build, planted at the corner of Fort Barrette Road and Kapolei Parkway, has been in the works since a 2025 groundbreaking and now shows up in county records as officially in the inspection phase. Operators say the restaurant will bring Sonic’s carhop service, island-only menu items and more than 100 local jobs to West Oʻahu.
Inspections Move Project Closer
The project entered inspections this week, the last major hurdle before permits are cleared and doors open to the public. According to Pacific Business News, permit records peg the valuation at roughly $2.6 million and confirm that inspection activity is underway.
Who’s Behind the Oʻahu Franchise
The Kapolei Sonic franchise is owned by North Shore Provisions LLC, which the State of Hawaiʻi lists as being organized “to acquire, develop, own and operate SONIC Drive-In restaurants” and identifies Edwin Prather as its agent. Public business filings with the State of Hawaiʻi back up that ownership structure and connect local franchise operations to the Prather group, as outlined by the State of Hawaiʻi DCCA.
Location, Timeline and Local Impact
Construction kicked off with a kahuna blessing and groundbreaking on April 25, 2025, on a lot directly across from Kapolei High School at Fort Barrette Road and Kapolei Parkway. Coverage at the time projected that the build would bring Sonic’s throwback drive-in experience to the neighborhood and generate more than 100 jobs for West Oʻahu residents, as reported by Hawaii News Now.
What To Expect
Hawaiʻi operators say the Kapolei menu will lean into island-focused items, noting that Sonic Hawaiʻi already highlights a local Teri Burger, and the brand’s Limeades for Learning program is set to be part of its community outreach here. Per the franchise website, the operator is aiming for an early-2026 opening and has started recruiting front-of-house and kitchen staff, with listings posted on Sonic Hawaiʻi.
Next Steps
With inspections in progress, the project now needs county sign-offs, final interior checks and staff training before an official opening date can be locked in. If everything stays on track, Kapolei residents could be sipping cherry limeades from their cars in the coming weeks as Sonic makes its first-ever Oʻahu debut.
