A violent burst of wind turned deadly in Kent County last Monday, when a 39-year-old Solon Township man was killed after a tree came crashing down on him during a thunderstorm in Courtland Township. The incident happened near Crinnion Avenue NE and 16 Mile Road NE, where friends told investigators they had been outside with the man as strong winds started taking down trees around them. They said he urged them to get out of the way just before one of those trees fell. First responders rushed in and immediately began life-saving efforts, but medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
According to The Detroit News, Kent County Sheriff's deputies and medics were called shortly after 5 p.m. to a home in the area and found the victim, who appeared to have been struck by a falling tree. A preliminary investigation indicates the gusty thunderstorm knocked down multiple trees on the property, and deputies are still working to sort out the full sequence of events.
What Investigators Said
The Kent County Sheriff's Office has identified the victim only as a 39-year-old resident of Solon Township and said detectives are still piecing together exactly how the tragedy unfolded. As FOX 17 reported, witnesses told deputies the man warned his friends to move moments before the tree came down, an action officials say likely prevented anyone else from being hurt. The sheriff's office has not yet released his name, pending notification of the family.
Storms And High Winds
Last Monday's storm line packed a punch across the Midwest, generating numerous reports of damaging winds that toppled trees and knocked out power in multiple counties. The Storm Prediction Center recorded widespread wind reports linked to last Monday's system, while local emergency crews said calls about downed trees surged through the afternoon and evening. Authorities are again reminding residents that sudden gusts can snap weakened trunks or tear down large limbs with little or no warning.
A Familiar Risk
This latest death adds to a troubling pattern of tree-related fatalities in Michigan. Last month, a Huntington Woods public works supervisor was killed by a falling limb while clearing storm debris, as reported by CBS News Detroit. In 2024, a 12-year-old was killed when a tree fell at the Howell Nature Center, according to the Associated Press. In each case, local officials have stressed the same warning: stay away from large trees and downed limbs during high-wind events.
The Kent County Sheriff's Office said its investigation into last Monday's fatal incident is ongoing and did not immediately release additional details.
