Klein Oak High School and the wider Spring community are in mourning after senior basketball standout Kenrik Kabano and his mother, Rosine, were killed in a crash on Interstate 45 near Madisonville on Monday. Kabano had just turned 18, was only weeks from graduation, and was a familiar presence on the Klein Oak varsity roster. For teammates, coaches, and classmates who expected to be celebrating his future, the news has landed like a gut punch.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Kabano transferred to Klein Oak after attending The John Cooper School and quickly made his mark. He earned first-team all-district honors while also being named to academic all-district and all-state lists. FOX 26 Houston reported that district officials publicly mourned the deaths and recognized his impact on and off the court.
“I am grateful to have known Kenrik ‘Kenny’ Kabano, one of the greatest young men I’ve ever met,” Klein Oak coach Joshua Ervin said, per the Houston Chronicle. Klein Oak athletic director Brandon Carpenter called Kabano “a true example of a Klein Oak student-athlete” who was beloved throughout the campus community.
Community Support And Fundraiser
A GoFundMe organized by family friends has drawn swift support, raising more than $59,000 from over 500 donors to help cover funeral and memorial costs, according to the campaign page. Organizers say the proceeds will go directly to Kenrik’s father, Mike, and the rest of the Kabano family.
International Experience And Profile
Kabano’s talent had already taken him onto the international stage. He represented Rwanda at the 2023 FIBA U16 Afrobasket tournament in Tunisia and posted several standout performances, according to the Rwanda Basketball Federation. In the days since the crash, messages of condolence have poured in from former teammates in Rwanda alongside classmates, teachers, and coaches at Klein Oak, underscoring just how far his influence had reached.
