A Los Angeles County judge on Friday sentenced a mother and stepfather to 22 years to life in prison after juries convicted them in the 2021 torture and death of their 16-year-old daughter, identified as Pearlene V. Prosecutors said the case began when the couple became enraged over the teen's text messages. Pearlene later collapsed and died in the makeshift bathroom of the trailer where the family had been living in August 2021.
What prosecutors say
According to prosecutors, the mother, Oriana Estela Elias, and the stepfather, Vincent Gibbs, punished Pearlene by forcing her to do strenuous exercises in the hot sun and beating her with a wooden plank and a belt for several hours, while her sisters watched. Authorities said the trailer had no running water or electricity, and that Elias instructed the sisters to lie to first responders before paramedics arrived.
The pair was sentenced on April 2 at the Michael D. Antonovich Antelope Valley Courthouse in Lancaster. Each received a term of 22 years to life, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
Juries, convictions, and a DA statement
"This sentence reflects an unthinkable betrayal by parents who are meant to protect their children from harm," Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in a statement.
On March 17, juries convicted Elias of one count of second-degree murder, one count of torture, one count of child abuse, and two counts of dissuading a witness. Gibbs was found guilty of one count of second-degree murder, one count of torture, and one count of felony child abuse.
Jurors also found true allegations that both defendants caused great bodily injury and that Gibbs used a weapon in the commission of the crime. Judge Scott Yang imposed the sentences in case No. 25AVCF00536, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
Courtroom details and charges
Prosecutors told jurors that the abuse started after Elias and Gibbs became angry over what they described as inappropriate messages Pearlene had sent to teenage boys, a motive laid out in testimony and court filings.
Deputy District Attorneys Suzanna Friedman and Diane Hong of the Family Violence Division, Antelope Valley Branch, prosecuted the case. It was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau. For a local summary of the DA statement and the sentencing, see the report from CBS Los Angeles.
Legal notes
The convictions include second-degree murder and torture counts that carried the sentence imposed by the court, with dissuading a witness charges applying to Elias as well. Court documents identify the defendants as Vallejo residents, and sentencing took place in the Antelope Valley branch of Los Angeles County Superior Court.
With penalties now imposed, any post-conviction filings or appeals will move through the normal Los Angeles County Superior Court channels.
