A late-night door-kicking prank streaking through parts of Allegheny County is doing more than just riling up Ring cameras. Homeowners report teenagers sprinting up to houses, pounding or kicking front doors, then bolting before anyone can respond. Some entryways are getting damaged, nerves are getting shredded, and law enforcement says the so-called prank is the kind of stunt that can go bad in a hurry.
Makena Wills told WTAE that her back-porch camera in Liberty Borough recorded two teens creeping up to her home, with one of them climbing a six-foot fence just to reach a rear door that would normally be out of reach. She said older neighbors on her street have been hit too, and that the late-night pounding left her shaken. Residents say they are now worried about both damage to their homes and the chance that a startled homeowner might confront someone at the door.
Sheriff Says His Own House Was Targeted
Allegheny County Sheriff Kevin Kraus told WTAE that his own family did not escape the trend. He said a similar late-night incident hit his house. "One night, in the middle of the night, it was about 12:30, our front door came flying open, broke the hinges," he said, adding that he grabbed a firearm because he believed someone was inside. "That’s when things like that can turn tragic," Kraus warned. He is urging parents to talk to their kids about the risks and asking anyone targeted to report incidents so officers can step in before something worse happens.
Local Police Investigating And Warning Parents
Other departments are raising red flags, too. As reported by WPXI, McKees Rocks police posted on Facebook that they are investigating multiple complaints of juveniles kicking doors and then taking off in what officers described as a modern version of "ding-dong-ditch." Police told the station the behavior could easily trigger a defensive reaction from someone inside and urged parents to make sure their kids are not getting in on the act.
Trend Has Triggered Arrests And Warnings Elsewhere
Officials note that Allegheny County is not the only place grappling with this. In other states, similar "door kick" challenges have already led to arrests and felony charges after videos showed either property damage or what appeared to be forced entry. Coverage from Florida and other areas has highlighted how quickly the prank can turn into criminal complaints and real danger for participants. WFTV reported on recent arrests tied to the trend.
How Residents Can Stay Safe
Law enforcement officials are asking residents not to take matters into their own hands. If someone appears to be trying to force their way in, they say to call 911, then save any video and share it with investigators. For non-emergencies, the Allegheny County Sheriff's Office lists phone numbers and online contact options on its website and encourages people to report any incidents they experience. In an emergency, authorities stress that residents should always call 911 first. Allegheny County Sheriff's Office.
