A quiet North Dallas intersection turned deadly early today when a man crashed his car into a traffic signal pole at Frankford Road and Preston Road and later died at the hospital, authorities said.
Dallas Fire-Rescue crews found the driver unresponsive inside the wrecked vehicle and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said he was alone in the car, and investigators have not yet determined the cause of the crash.
Crash details
According to FOX 4, the collision happened around 2:15 a.m. when the driver continued straight from a right-turn-only lane, lost control and slammed into the signal pole. The impact trapped him inside the car until first responders could pull him out.
Dallas Fire-Rescue was first to arrive and took the man to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Officials have not yet released his name as they work to notify his family.
This stretch has seen other serious wrecks
The Frankford corridor has already seen its share of tragedy this year, a pattern that has residents and city officials on edge.
In February, two pedestrians were killed after a crash at Frankford Road and Coit Road, according to The Dallas Morning News. The incident added to growing concern about safety on major north Dallas thoroughfares.
City officials have also flagged Frankford and nearby intersections as trouble spots during a Dallas City Council briefing that highlighted spikes in crash data along north Dallas arterials. The council transcript and video are posted on the City of Dallas site.
Investigation ongoing
Dallas police say the cause of Thursday morning's crash is still under investigation, and they have not indicated whether speed, impairment or mechanical issues might have played a role, according to FOX 4.
Investigators continue to examine the crash scene and the vehicle for clues. Officials have not released additional information about the hospital where the driver was taken or about the moments leading up to the impact.
