A Cuyahoga County corrections officer is facing felony charges after being arrested Tuesday in Lorain County and booked into the county jail, prompting swift administrative action from her employer while the criminal case plays out.
According to the FOX 8 I-Team, the officer has been identified as Cheyanne McClutchen. She is charged with conveying prohibited items to a detention facility and aggravated possession of drugs. The I-Team reports that the Ohio State Highway Patrol investigated the case, that charges were filed in Lorain County Common Pleas Court, and that McClutchen was taken to the Lorain County jail. Her arraignment is scheduled for next Thursday (April 30).
What the charges mean
Under Ohio law, bringing drugs or weapons into a jail is a distinct crime. R.C. 2921.36 makes it illegal to convey certain prohibited items onto the grounds of a detention facility. On the drug side, aggravated possession is covered by R.C. 2925.11, with penalties that depend on the type and amount of the substance involved, ranging from fifth-degree felonies up to first-degree felonies for the largest quantities.
Context and past cases
The arrest comes amid ongoing scrutiny of contraband and staff conduct in Northeast Ohio jails. Earlier this year, another Cuyahoga County corrections officer was hit with federal charges accusing him of smuggling drugs into the jail, as reported by Cleveland 19, highlighting persistent oversight challenges for county corrections facilities.
Next steps
McClutchen is expected back in Lorain County court next Thursday for arraignment, and Cuyahoga County told the FOX 8 I-Team that she will be placed on unpaid administrative leave while the criminal case moves forward. Prosecutors will determine how to proceed with the charges. At this stage, the allegations remain unproven, and McClutchen is presumed innocent unless and until she is found guilty in court.
