More than four years after a bicyclist was found dead along North Shields Street, Larimer County deputies have arrested 30-year-old Nicholas Sierra of Loveland in connection with the Oct. 7, 2021, hit-and-run that killed 29-year-old Luis "Darnell" Loma.
Sierra was taken into custody on April 18 and booked on two felony counts: failing to remain at the scene of an accident involving death and insurance fraud. Larimer County Court set a $5,000 cash-only bond. Investigators say the case never left their desks, with detectives continuing to test evidence and chase down tips, and they emphasize that the probe is still very much active.
How Larimer County Detectives Built The Case
Detectives told reporters they identified a primary suspect in December 2025 after years of interviews, forensic testing and following community tips. They said they then presented that evidence to a judge, which led to an arrest warrant and Sierra’s April arrest, according to Denver7.
Deputies say Sierra was booked into the Larimer County Jail on two felony counts and that the investigation remains active. Officials described the arrest as the product of a long-running, methodical probe that leaned on evolving investigative tools along with information from the public.
Crash Scene, Vehicle Clues, and Outside Help
Authorities say Loma was riding his bicycle on North Shields Street near Casa Lane when a vehicle struck him and left him in the roadway. Evidence at the scene pointed investigators toward a gray 2009 or 2010 Toyota RAV4 or a similar SUV, as reported by KKTV.
The Colorado State Patrol assisted with the original 2021 investigation, and deputies later ordered extensive testing on items collected from the scene. Investigators say follow-up interviews and community tips were critical as they worked the case over multiple years, slowly tightening the focus of their search.
Sheriff’s Statement And How To Reach Investigators
In a statement posted on the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, Sheriff John Feyen said, “Our investigators never gave up on finding justice for Mr. Loma and his family,” adding that he hopes the arrest brings some measure of closure to those who knew Loma.
The sheriff’s office is still asking for information. Anyone who might know more is urged to contact Investigator Stephen Gates at (970) 498-5169; that phone number appears in the agency’s Facebook post, which also includes photos and a short timeline of key investigative steps since 2021.
Charges, Penalties And What Comes Next
According to deputies, Sierra faces a Class 3 felony for failing to remain at the scene of an accident that resulted in death and a Class 5 felony for insurance fraud. Under Colorado law, leaving the scene of an accident that results in death can be charged as a Class 3 felony, which carries significant prison time and fines, per the Colorado Revised Statutes, section 42-4-1601.
Insurance-fraud statutes and classifications are set out in section 18-5-211 of the Colorado Revised Statutes, which distinguishes penalties depending on the conduct. Local court records reported by the Fort Collins Coloradoan (via an aggregation at AOL) indicate Sierra was released on a $5,000 cash bond and had a court date scheduled later in April. The sheriff’s office says the investigation remains ongoing and continues to urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
