State police are digging into the death of a 73-year-old man who died while incarcerated at the Macomb Correctional Facility in Lenox Township after he was found unresponsive last Wednesday. Staff at the prison tried to revive him with life-saving measures, but he did not survive, officials said, and the case is now being treated as a possible homicide.
The Michigan State Police has launched a homicide investigation, and the Michigan Department of Corrections says no suspect has been identified so far, according to MLive. Prison spokeswoman Jenni Riehle told the outlet that “lifesaving measures were initiated but were unsuccessful.”
Macomb Correctional Facility houses adult men at multiple security levels and holds roughly 1,400 prisoners, the Michigan Department of Corrections reports. The department’s facility page notes on-site health services and programming and lists the prison in Lenox Township, southeast of the Detroit metro area.
Michigan Department of Corrections records identify the man as 73-year-old Daniel Keith Hosmer, who was serving a 20-to-60-year sentence after a 2023 Kent County conviction on two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a child under 13, according to MLive. State records cited in coverage show Hosmer had prior convictions dating back to the 1970s, including second-degree home invasion-conspiracy and indecent liberties involving a child.
Investigation Status
Michigan State Police investigators are leading the case, and no arrests or charges have been announced. The Department of Corrections says the matter remains under investigation and has not released additional information.
